Getting started
From zero to a verified, encrypted conversation in about five minutes.
1. Create your account
Go to sign up. Your username becomes your chat address, @username:0r834h.duckdns.org, and can't be changed later. Use a strong, unique password (12+ characters).
2. Turn on two-factor authentication
In the portal open Security center → Two-factor authentication. Add an authenticator app or a security key, then save your recovery codes. Some workspaces require MFA before you can sign in to chat.
3. Open the chat app
Click Open chat. The app signs you in through your Lumen account. On first sign-in your browser generates this device's encryption keys locally.
4. Save your recovery key
The app asks you to set up secure backup. It shows a recovery key once. Store it in a password manager or print it. It's the only way to unlock your encrypted history on a new device if you have no other signed-in device. We never receive it.
5. Start a conversation
Choose New chat, enter someone's Matrix address (they can be on another server), and send a message. New chats are encrypted automatically.
6. Verify each other
Open the person's profile in the room and choose Verify. You'll both see the same emoji; confirm they match. From then on, their verified devices show a green shield and you'll be warned if their identity changes.
